Fire
U.S. Fire Departments respond to estimated 1.5 Million fires a year. These fires cause in excess of 10 Billion Dollars of Property Damage each year. And when fire strikes, lives are suddenly turned around. Often, the hardest part is knowing where to begin and who to contact. Most important thing to remember is that valuables can be replaced, lives can not. A fire spread quickly; there is no time to gather property or make a phone call. In just two minutes, a fire can become life threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames.
If your residence is on fire - get out! If you are with burn victims, or are a burn victim yourself, call 9-1-1; cool and cover burns to reduce chance of further injury or infection. If you detect heat or smoke when entering a damaged building, evacuate immediately. If you are a tenant, contact the landlord. If you have a safe or strong box, do not try to open it. It can hold intense heat for several hours. If the door is opened before the box has cooled, the contents could burst into flames. If you must leave your home because a building inspector says the building is unsafe, ask someone you trust to watch the property during your absence. Following fire the first thing is to make sure you and your loved ones are safe.Stay with relatives or friends. If it is safe try to locate the following items: identifications, insurance information, medical information, eyeglasses, hearing aids, valuables, such as credit cards, checkbooks, jewelry, etc. Notify your Insurance Company and your Mortgage company of fire damage to your property. Do not throw away any damaged goods until after an inventory is made.
All damage is taken into consideration when insurance claim is prepared for your fire damage. Professional water and fire restoration service may be the best choice for cleaning and restoring your personal belongings. Take as many pictures and/or videos of your damaged property and dwelling as you can. They all will be useful during your insurance settlement. Make necessary temporary fixes like cover damaged roof with tarp, board up windows, etc. to prevent further damage. Document any and all expenses, save the receipts.
